look for hidden moisture. >> the library will be our classroom the next two months. >> the cost is estimated to be in the 10s of thousands of dollars. a section of vine hill road just outside scotts valley collapsed yesterday during the downpour. crews are hoping to stabilize the road so they can reopen the line early tomorrow. residents are filling up sandbags nearby. crews have been clearing debris from massive sink hole as they try to stabilize the area. the ground washed away in yesterday's storm. lated late today crews finally shut it off. as jay hernandez reports.

>> reporter: this 80-foot long 40-foot wide and 15-foot deep hole. >> when i wake up, all this is water. >> reporter: outside of his window you can see crews working. early morning rain cracked the sidewalk. but yesterday afternoon the situation got worse. >> i heard the boom. >> the massive sink hole is feet from his doorstep. the station installation of a trash rack is meant to keep debris from clogging the creek. hard rain swept through and washed away what little protection the rack offered. >> we had a ton of debris come down, large log six sections. there is a bureau sitting in the creek. >> the city faces damage estimates in six figures. greg arthur's curiosity pulled this landscape architect from

information during this newscast as it becomes available. san francisco's new central subway hasn't even been built yet but it may already been headed a new direction. janet costiano has more. jena. >> reporter: i want to show you this construction site behind me. this is the hole where the machine will go into ground. the problem and controversy is how and when to get it out. and they have only two months to make a decision. the problem is the 40-foot diameter machine only going one way. officials had planned to make a hole along columbia bust to get the machine out of the ground. merchants have filed a lawsuit saying it would be too

disruptive. >> we are concerned about noise and dust and dirt. >> tomorrow the director is proposing two alternate options. someone to buy the former theater moverring the exit hole 90 feet from the original site. that could soon become a future station if the subway is ever extended to north beach. >> probably would be a little easier. >> buying the property would add up to $8 million to the $1.6 billion project. the other option is to leave the machine underground. but they would have to boy the machine and permanently seal it in cement adding 3 to $5 million to the cost. >> they aren't meant to be buried for any length of time, so we would have to bury it there and leave it this. >> reporter: the board meets tomorrow to discuss alternatives, but time is running out. they need a decision by

february first so the contractor can finish the job. oakland police are remaining tight lipped about the arrest of a teenage autistic girl when was assaulted after walking away from the home. we are told the 16-year-old victim who has the mental capacity of a 7-year-old left the center last tuesday. two days later she turned up on a bus in san francisco. the girl's father says his daughter was sexually assaulted. he says he is upset about the lack of communication from the police. >> by the bruises i know what happened. the police know what happened but the police aren't discussing it with me. >> in a statement released today oakland police said they would like to provide more information but can only confirm that an arrest has been made. gunfire outside an oakland middle school happened about 11:40. police say two suspects fired

shots during an attempted home envision near the school. one man was arrested near the scene. a witness said another man was spotted limping away. police say a man did show up at the hospital a half hour later with a gunshot wound. the investigation is on going. a 14-year-old boy pled guilty today to the charges he kidnapped and sexually assaulted a 65-year-old woman. he is being charged with torture, kidnapping, rape and other charges. police say he abducted his victim. they say he assaulted her before lving her unconscious and duct taped in a ditch. john mcafee is denying reports that he was arrested. he said it was a double that was arrested. tech possible posted a notice on his blog that he is safe and no longer in the caribbean nation where authorities say he is a person of interest in the

killing of his neighbor. mcafee says he peers the police want to kill him. back in court nearly four years after he was shot tod. the federal court in san francisco are considering a lawsuit against two other officers. the officers' attorney say they should be aloud immunity because the shooting was an accident. >> this was a mistake. >> given all the evidence we have a jury could find him responsible for the taking of the life of grant. >> the court is not expected to make a decision on the case for months. he was convicted of involuntary manslaughter in a criminal court. a medical marijuana dispensary has won in court.

landlord has asked the federal judge to order the dispensary to stop greg and selling marijuana in her building. the u.s. supreme court has once again delayed a decision on proposition 8, the state's controversial voter approved ban on same sex marriage. we could find out as soon as friday. if the supreme court chooses not to review the channel we could find out next monday. justices are asked to review the supreme court decision. if the court declines, gay and lesbian couples will have the right to marry. saving $800 billion in tax reform and 900 billion in mandatory cuts. it does not increase tax rates on upper income americans which the white house insist must be included in any deal. on wall street stocks

opened higher but eventually lost ground. dow fell 59 points. the nasdaq dropped 8 points. new figures show new car sales are up around the bay area and nationwide. the biggest spike is up with volkswagon up 35% and toyota up 17%. chrysler had the most robust sells, up 14%. an economist we spoke to said new car sales are an indicator of an economic recovery. >> the unemployment rate is declining slowly. it looks like the housing market nationally may have bottomed out. so, it's a recovery alex savage -- but fragile. >> sales last month were even better than the national number. investigators are looking into a fire right near the zoo that caused an estimated $1 million worth of damage.
